Exploring Time Varying Information Visualizations with Direct Manipulation
Description
Interactivity is an important functionality offered by majority of visualization applications to facilitate exploratory and navigation tasks, provoking insight and investigative inquiry. Direct manipulation interaction techniques are derived from real-world metaphors, namely, physical object manipulation, making them easily adoptable and intuitive. In this project we present some prototypes illustratingexamples of usingdirect manipulation to interact with the data elements of a visualization, for observing changes and trends over time. Interacting with data elements in this way can be used to investigate space-centric queries, such as “When was a point in a scatterplot increasing?”. Our prototypes are implemented as web applications and are designed for use on touch screens.
